Photograph of Ted Garrison Biography

I received early training after the Second World War at the Academy of Arts in Newark, New Jersey from 1946 through 1947.  I studied with Robert Brackman and Reginald Marsh from 1948 through 49 at the Arts Students League in New York City, then studied at Pratt Institute for a year.

I worked as a floral designer in Manhattan from 1951 until 1968. In 1969, I moved to the "country" and opened a local retail flower and antiques shop from which I retired in 1989. For the last twenty-eight years, the beautiful Bucks County has been my home and life is good.

As a painter my impelling concern is a rather straightforward approach to the depiction of the nude figure in all of its strengths, integrity, and vulnerability. The model is exposed physically as well as mentally, in an alien environment, to the probing eye of the artist. It takes great concentration on the part of the model to stay focused on the pose, and at the same time appear relaxed and not carved from stone.

I enjoy the rapport that can develop between the sitter and the painter. Exploring mutual likes and dislikes, discussing authors, composers, trendy foods and wines, recent movies and travel experiences. I enjoy the models appraisal of the work in progress. It all makes a very rewarding way to spend three hours, which fly by.
